Trail Building

Walking – in Canada – has started the twenty-first century as a leading movement for physical activity. For local government trail building & construction have become priorities. In Canada this is partly due to an aging generation of workers who wish to get healthy exercise in a non-programmed fashion. Many towns are reconsidering the layout and walking access in their subdivisions. Linear trails and green space offer huge quality of life benefits.

Tim Richards has been active for many years in trail planning and construction. Let Expert Access Services help get you on the ‘right path’ towards making healthier communities through trails and linear greenways.

Holland Creek Trails

As a trail consultant I have been responsible for the planning and management of a five-year build-out of the Holland Creek Trail system in the Town of Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. This project involved many stakeholders and sponsors in the community, and application for funding from various sources.

This trail and its continued development is a key element in the town of Ladysmith strategy for growth and quality of living.

Trail Planning

When planning trails, I like to take a detailed digital photographic inventory along proposed routes. This creates a digital photo bank which can then be utilized recalled in future planning and budgeting sessions. Presentations to committees, community groups and potential sponsors can be developed from these photos.

Another useful tool usually needed is a written trail building plan. When starting out, community trail builders including volunteers may need to be supervised quite closely to ensure that routing is exact, construction details are adhered to, and that care is taken to not damage flora and fauna. Specifying materials and techniques aid in this goal. Your experienced and trusted crews build trails without this level of detail in writing, but when establishing trails for the first time, a written trail construction plan enables all parties to establish measurable outcomes and qualities which are to be maintained.

Call for a no-obligation discussion of your trail planning issues, and let Tim Richards and Expert Access help you establish priorities and get started.
